Acupuncture Therapy
Acupuncture is the stimulation of precisely defined, specific acupoints along the skin of the body involving penetration by thin needles or the application of heat, pressure. In a modern acupuncture session, an initial consultation is followed by taking the pulse on both arms, and an inspection of the tongue.
Classically, in clinical practice, acupuncture is highly individualized and based on philosophy and intuition, and not on controlled scientific research. The number and frequency of acupuncture sessions vary but in most cases one session is not sufficient. In our clinic acupuncture typically lasts from 45 to 75 minutes.
Cupping
Cupping is an ancient Chinese form of alternative medicine in which a local suction is created on the skin; this mobilizes blood flow in order to promote healing. Suction is created using heat (fire) or mechanical devices (hand or electrical pumps).
Moxibustion
We use moxa to warm regions and meridian points with the intention of stimulating circulation through the points and inducing a smoother flow of blood and qi. Mugwort can act as an emmenagogue, meaning that it stimulates blood-flow in the pelvic area and uterus. It can treat conditions associated with the “cold” or “yang deficiencies” in Chinese Medicine. Also moxibustion militates against cold and dampness in the body, and can serve to turn breech babies.
Herbal Therapy
Chinese herbal medicine are primarily plants, but also some minerals and animal products. Different parts of plants, such as the leaves, roots, stems, flowers, and seeds, are used. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, herbs are often combined in formulas and given as teas, capsules, liquid extracts, granules, or powders.
Chinese herbal medicine is a major part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It has been used for centuries in China, where herbs are considered fundamental therapy for many acute and chronic conditions.
Pediatric Tui Na
Traditional Chinese Medicine promotes the use of therapeutic massage, or Tui Na, for the treatment of infants. Until the age of 10, children respond well to this gentle form of therapy. The various conditions that Tui Na can heal.
In addition to promoting healthy maturation, pediatric Tui Na can also treat a number of conditions that children suffer from. These include nausea, lack of appetite, fever, nightmares, cold, cough and bed-wetting.
A single massage session will last as long as 30 minutes, and should be performed as often as necessary given the nature of the child’s condition. The techniques are easy to learn and can therefore be reinforced at home between sessions with a professional.
